Third day of protests in Syria
In Syria a third day of protests has been marred by violence. The police have opened fire on demonstrators using tear gas and live rounds. Reports say that one person is dead and around 100 others have been injured. Protesters want an end to 48 years of emergency law. In Deraa, the government has attempted to ease tensions by offering to release 15 schoolchildren who were arrested for scrawling opposition graffiti on a wall. This is a rare instance of the Syrian authorities bowing to pressure from the street. The country has been ruled by the Baath Party headed up by president Basher al-Assad since a coup in 1963. All opposition parties are banned. In Deraa on Friday, the authorities opened fire on unarmed protesters, killing four people. At the funerals of two protesters yesterday, opposition activists met with officials and handed them a list of demands, including the release of political prisoners, and the dismantling of the secret police.

Diplomatic and military pressure builds against Gaddafi
The international response to the Libyan crisis is becoming a two pronged attack – on one hand diplomatic pressure has been intensified, with the United Nations unanimously suspending Libya’s membership of the UN’s Human Rights Council. Read our news file United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon told the Assembly: “The world has spoken with one voice: we demand an immediate end to the violence against civilians and full respect for their fundamental human rights, including those of peaceful assembly and free speech.” The other approach is a flexing of military muscle by both NATO and the US due to fears that this – the most violent of the recent Arab revolts – may grow bloodier if Gaddafi doesn’t soon quit. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, speaking to the House of Foreign Affairs Committee, said: “We have also with NATO allies and with the Pentagon begun to look at potential planning, preparedness in the event that we feel it’s necessary for both humanitarian and other reasons that there would have to be actions taken. One of those actions that is under review is a no-fly zone.” Three US military ships have now passed through the Suez Canal towards the Libyan coast. As yet their deployment is only for a possible humanitarian effort, but that could change.

Syrian forces attack and kill six protesters
At least six people are believed killed after Syrian forces fired on protesters near a mosque in the southern city of Deraa. One of those killed is said to have been a doctor who went to help the victims in the attack. Protesters had erected tents in the grounds of the Omari mosque saying they would remain there until their demands for reform were met. Syria has seen six days of unprecedented unrest in which a total of ten civilians have now died at the hands of the country’s military. President Bashar al-Assad is facing his biggest ever challenge to his 11-year rule. As head of the ruling Baath Party, activists have targeted the organisation’s buildings as symbols of oppression and corruption. Despite promises of reform, Assad refuses to end 48 years of emergency rule or allow political opposition.

More fears about contaminated produce in Japan
The authorities in Tokyo are advising that tap water should not be given to babies after levels of radiation dangerous for infants were detected at a purifying plant. Read our news file Officials have stopped the shipment of some produce from the Fukushima area. Unhealthy levels of radiation have been found in 11 types of vegetables. But shoppers are confused over food safety. When questioned by Euronews, one said that many people thought more types of vegetables had been contaminated. But another said she had been told vegetables were safe to eat as long as they had been washed. In Fukushima, some power has been restored to the stricken nuclear plant but experts on the scene say it will be some time before they can say the damaged reactors have stabilised. Meanwhile, in the coastal town of Higashi-Matsushima, a mechanical digger was used to dig a mass grave for two dozen victims of the earthquake and tsunami on March the 11th. Officials say up to 1000 people could eventually be laid to rest at the site. The grave is temporary. Burials are unusual in Japan, where cremation is the norm, but the authorities say the system is currently overwhelmed so the dead are being interred until a later date. The official death toll has now risen to more than 9,000. Almost 14,000 are still missing.

Warnings of more violence in western Libya
Armed rebels have set up checkpoints to control access to Nalut in western Libya. They overran the town on Monday and want to stop it falling back into the hands of forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi. The Libyan leader has reportedly deployed his army to the area in an attempt to reassert control of the region. Read our news file A few kilometres east in Adjabiya, several military weapons stores were attacked from the air. People in the town think the aim was to prevent Gaddafi’s enemies from using the weapons against him. Libya’s wave of revolt has spread from the east. Gaddafi is dug in in Tripoli, the capital. Both sides have become entrenched and experts say the direction the uprising takes next could depend on who can hold out the longest. There have been numerous defections to the rebel cause, and harsh international sanctions have been imposed. Some experts say Gaddafi’s hold on power has never been so weak but the Libyan leader appeared unconcerned in an interview yesterday. Gaddafi’s remarks that the Libyan people still loved him prompted the US to label him “delusional.” For many in the international community, the question now is, how long can Gaddafi last?

Protestors clash with police in Libya
Demonstrators have clashed with police and pro-government supporters in Libya’s second city, Benghazi. Numbers are vague but the clashes broke out as protesters marched on government offices. Libya is sandwiched between Tunisia and Egypt, whose leaders have both recently been ousted by popular uprisings. Benghazi has a history of antagonism with the Gaddafi government. The city is a rallying point for the banned militant organisation the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group. The government has announced this morning that 110 alleged members will be freed from Tripoli’s Abu Salim jail. Many have already been freed and returned to their homes in Benghazi. It is reported last night’s protest was sparked by the arrest of a lawyer for families whose relatives were among hundreds shot at the jail in June 1996.
